Why Vaccinations Matter
Vaccines are one of the most important tools we have for protecting children from serious, sometimes life-threatening diseases. They have saved millions of lives worldwide and are rigorously tested for safety before being approved for use.
The Recommended Immunization Schedule
The CDC and AAP recommend the following vaccines for children from birth through age 18:
Birth to 6 Months
- Hepatitis B (3 doses)
- DTaP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis) — first dose at 2 months
- IPV (Polio) — first dose at 2 months
- Hib (Haemophilus influenzae type b) — first dose at 2 months
- PCV (Pneumococcal) — first dose at 2 months
- Rotavirus — first dose at 2 months
6 to 12 Months
- Continue DTaP, IPV, Hib, PCV, and Rotavirus series
- Hepatitis A (2 doses, starting at 12 months)
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) — first dose at 12-15 months
- Varicella (Chickenpox) — first dose at 12-15 months
Annual
- Influenza vaccine — every year starting at 6 months
Addressing Common Concerns
Do vaccines cause autism?
No. Extensive research involving millions of children has found no link between vaccines and autism. The original study suggesting a connection was retracted and discredited.
Are too many vaccines overwhelming for a child's immune system?
No. Children's immune systems handle thousands of antigens every day. The total number of antigens in the current vaccine schedule is a small fraction of what children encounter naturally.
What about side effects?
Most side effects are mild — soreness at the injection site, low-grade fever, or fussiness. Serious side effects are extremely rare.
Keeping Records
Maintain a personal health record of your child's vaccinations. Most pediatricians provide immunization records, and many states have immunization information systems.
The Bottom Line
Vaccines are safe, effective, and essential. They protect not only your child but also vulnerable members of the community who cannot be vaccinated. Talk to your pediatrician about any questions or concerns.
